Practical Information

Obtaining Your Social Security Number

Most of us are used to having social security cards in the countries we come from. Armenia is no different. Though it is not always a card you are issued. Often you might receive your official information, a document you have to present to verify your person at banks like HSBC and that which you most certainly need if you are applying for a job, on a single piece of paper. We recommend you have a folder for all important documents at home in a single drawer to make life a touch easier, at least for these types of cases.

Furthermore, it is recommended to scan and file digitally, as well as make a copy, just in case. Normally, a photo of the original should be enough when you need to present it. You will need your social security card to be able to access social services in Armenia as well.

How to obtain your Social Security Number

One you have received the official stamp in your passport verifying your registered address (also known as a "grantsoum"), you should book an appointment at migration.e-gov.am at your local police station. On the date booked, you should approach your police station for the card.

What is the card used for?

The concept was introduced in 1999 and has since become an important part of each citizen’s daily life.

You will need your SSN for:
- Poverty family benefits
- Unemployment benefits
- Old age pensions
- Disability pensions
- Any other government assistance program

You will also need it to open an account, pay your taxes, obtain licenses, etc.

Note: If you have citizenship, your ID card replaced the social security card in 2012. The ID cards are not mandatory though, which is why many still have the documents instead.
