From Bahraich to Yerevan: An Indian Expat’s Journey into Armenia’s Tech Frontier
In the rapidly evolving world of technology, professionals are often driven by the desire to explore new horizons, both in their careers and in their personal lives. Rohan Singh, a Senior Cloud Infrastructure Engineer at SADA - an Insight Company, exemplifies this spirit of exploration. Originally from Bahraich, India, Rohan’s journey led him to Yerevan—a decision shaped by professional aspirations and enriched by cultural discoveries.
A Calculated Risk for Professional Growth
Rohan's relocation to Armenia was a strategic career move. “One of my close senior friends informed me of the opportunity and referred me for the position,” Rohan recalls. The role at SADA - an Insight Company, a leading Google Cloud Premier partner, aligned perfectly with his technical expertise. The decision to move wasn’t taken lightly. It was driven by a blend of professional ambition and the recognition of an opportunity too good to pass up.
“At 23, I realized that waiting for the perfect opportunity was futile,” he explains. “I decided to step out of my comfort zone and take a career risk.” This risk paid off handsomely, as Rohan quickly rose through the ranks, achieving a promotion to Senior Cloud Infrastructure Engineer within a year.
Expectations and Realities: A Professional and Personal Adventure
Rohan’s expectations for Armenia were twofold: he sought professional growth and the chance to experience the natural beauty and cultural richness of the Caucasus region. His professional journey has indeed been rewarding. “I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with a diverse range of clients from North America, Europe, and the Middle East,” he says, reflecting on the rapid career growth he’s experienced in Armenia.
On a personal level, Armenia has offered Rohan a unique living experience. “There are still numerous places to explore,” he shares. “Living in Armenia is an enriching experience, filled with so many stories.” This sense of continuous discovery underscores Rohan’s appreciation for the country’s rich cultural heritage and stunning landscapes.
Cultural Adjustments and Embracing Discomfort
Moving from India to Armenia presented its own set of challenges. The language barrier, in particular, was a significant hurdle. “While I can’t speak Armenian fluently, I can understand the context,” Rohan admits. However, he’s found creative ways to navigate these challenges, often relying on the help of his colleagues and friends. “Sometimes, I even present myself as a tourist to get discounts because I can’t speak Armenian,” he adds with a laugh.
Despite the initial hesitations—ranging from the limited technical opportunities in Armenia to the lack of direct flights from India—Rohan embraced the discomfort. He cites his admiration for the “Yes Theory” philosophy, which encourages people to seek discomfort as a means of personal growth. This mindset has enabled him to adapt to and thrive in a culturally different environment.
Engagement with Armenia’s Tech Community
Rohan’s involvement in the Google Cloud community as a Google Cloud Champion Innovator (Modern Architecture) has further enriched his experience in Armenia. Although he’s yet to fully engage in mentoring within the local tech community—largely due to the language barrier—Rohan has made his mark in other ways. He participated in Devfest’23, organized by Google Developers Group (GDG) Yerevan, where he spoke on stage and connected with tech enthusiasts from Armenia and beyond.
“Speaking at Devfest’23 was an excellent opportunity for networking and making connections,” Rohan reflects. His involvement in such events highlights his commitment to contributing to Armenia’s growing tech landscape, even as he continues to mentor individuals in India.
Reflections on Armenia’s Tech Industry
Having worked in various regions, Rohan brings a unique perspective to Armenia’s tech industry. “The local tech industry is distinct from that of India or the Asia–Pacific (APAC) region due to its nascent stage of development,” he notes. However, he’s optimistic about the sector’s growth, having observed a steady increase in the number of tech companies in Armenia over the past two years.
Rohan believes that attracting more companies through favorable policies and ensuring that Armenian youth are technologically proficient will be key to the country’s rapid growth in the tech sector. His insights reflect a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing Armenia’s tech ecosystem.
Looking Ahead: Aspirations and Advice
As for his future, Rohan has plans—both personal and professional—that he intends to execute when the time is right. While he doesn’t elaborate, it’s clear that Armenia has become more than just a stop on his career journey; it’s a place where he’s found opportunities for growth and connection.
For others in tech considering a move to Armenia, Rohan offers valuable advice: “Armenia presents a unique opportunity for people to contribute to the development of its tech industry, which is currently in its nascent stages.” He also highlights the importance of engaging with Armenia’s rich cultural heritage and the hospitality of its people.
Rohan’s story is one of stepping out of one’s comfort zone and embracing new challenges. His journey from India to Armenia is not only about professional growth but also about personal discovery and the impact one can make by being part of a burgeoning community in a country with a rich history and a promising future.
