Armenian Language Courses

Program Overview

Repat Armenia provides free Armenian language courses in Armenia, sponsored by the H. Hovnanian Family Foundation, to support the social and professional integration of repatriates.

These structured, face-to-face Armenian language classes in Yerevan are designed specifically for diaspora Armenians who have recently relocated and want to strengthen their language skills for daily life, employment, and long-term integration.

Each course cycle lasts 3 months and includes:

  • 3 in-person classes per week
  • 1.5-hour lessons
  • Practical focus on reading, writing, and speaking

Available Armenian Language Courses

Our Armenian language program includes several levels and specialized tracks:

Beginner

Elementary Armenian Course (English-Speaking Repatriates)

Designed for English-speaking repatriates with zero or very basic knowledge of Armenian. Participants develop foundational skills in reading, writing, and speaking Eastern Armenian.

Beginner

Elementary Armenian Course (Russian-Speaking Repatriates)

Tailored for Russian-speaking repatriates with little to no prior knowledge of Armenian. Participants develop foundational skills in reading, writing, and speaking Eastern Armenian.

Intermediate

Intermediate Armenian Course

For repatriates who already have a basic foundation and wish to improve their Armenian reading, writing, and speaking skills — particularly for professional development and workplace communication in Armenia.

Intermediate

Western Armenian to Eastern Armenian Adaptation Course

Designed for participants with intermediate to advanced knowledge of Western Armenian who need structured support transitioning to Eastern Armenian for everyday and professional use in Armenia.

Advanced

Business Armenian Course

For upper-intermediate Armenian speakers who want to strengthen their professional communication and business writing skills in Armenian. This course is ideal for repatriates working or seeking employment in Armenia.

Who Is Eligible?

To participate in the Armenian language program, applicants must:

  • Be repatriates of at least 25% Armenian origin
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Priority is given to individuals who have moved to Armenia within the last two years

The program is specifically designed for diaspora Armenians integrating into Armenian society.

Program Structure & Capacity

  • Each cohort accommodates up to 50 participants
  • 3 cohorts are organized annually
  • Classes are conducted face-to-face in Armenia
  • Registration for the next cohort will open in mid-April 2026.

About Getting Information & Staying Updated

Where are Armenian Language Course announcements published?

Announcements are shared across all Repat Armenia social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and Telegram. They are also shared within Repat Armenia Armenian Repatriates Network on Facebook and our WhatsApp community which you can join by reaching out to our community manager.

Do I need to sign up to avoid missing the next cohort?

Courses are held three times per year. You may request a reminder as indicated above to stay informed about the next session.

About Registration & Application

Is registration the same as applying?

Yes. Registration and application refer to the same process.

What happens after I submit the application?

After submitting your application, please wait until the application deadline has passed. This is followed by a selection period, which typically takes 2–3 days after applications close. During this time, the Program Manager may contact you via email to clarify eligibility or other application details. Once the selection process is complete, you will be contacted by phone (using the number provided in your application form) to receive the selection results and course details.

Is it possible to apply after the deadline?

No. The application period typically remains open for 2–3 weeks. We encourage all applicants to submit their applications within the stated deadline. If spots remain available after the deadline, this will be announced, and applications may be accepted on a rolling basis until all places are filled.

Can I edit my application after submitting it?

Yes, applications can be edited after submission.

Can I apply for more than one course at the same time?

No. Participants may enroll in only one group, as enrolling in multiple groups would reduce availability for other applicants.

About Class Location

Where are the classes held?

Classes are currently held at the Hovnanian Family Foundation building.

Are classes held in the same location throughout the course?

Yes. All sessions take place at the same location.

Are online classes available?

No. Only in-person classes are offered.

Do participants need to travel to different locations?

No. All classes are conducted at the same venue.

About the Schedule

On which days are classes held?

Classes take place on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

What time do classes take place?

There are two evening time slots available:
7:00–8:30 PM
8:30–10:00 PM
Group timing depends on final group formation.

Are morning groups available?

No. Only evening groups are offered.

Can the course be combined with full-time work?

Yes. Since classes begin at 7:00 PM, they are scheduled after standard working hours and can be combined with full-time employment.

About the Instructors

Who teaches the classes?

The courses are taught by instructors from Big Mind Academy, who have been part of this program since 2021.

Are instructors from Armenia or the diaspora?

The instructors are based in Armenia and hold Master's and PhD degrees in Armenian Studies from Yerevan State University and Yerevan State Pedagogical University.

Do instructors have experience working with repatriates?

Yes. Big Mind Academy instructors have over six years of experience working with repatriates.

Is the same instructor assigned for the entire course?

Yes. The same instructor leads the group from beginning to end, unless unforeseen circumstances arise.

About the Language of Instruction

Are classes conducted entirely in Armenian?

Beginner-level groups for Russian- and English-speaking repatriates are conducted in Russian or English, respectively, with Armenian vocabulary introduced from the first lesson. Intermediate, Business Armenian, and Western-to-Eastern Armenian Adaptation courses are conducted entirely in Armenian.

Are English-speaking and Russian-speaking groups separate?

Yes.

Can participants ask questions in a language other than Armenian?

Yes. However, in intermediate, business, and Western-to-Eastern adaptation courses, participants are expected to primarily use Armenian and should not regularly rely on other languages.

About Course Content

What is covered during the classes?

Classes focus on developing practical Armenian language skills across all levels, including comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing. Depending on the course, participants may build everyday communication skills, strengthen grammar and vocabulary, transition from Western to Eastern Armenian, or develop professional and business communication skills.

How much focus is placed on spoken Armenian?

Speaking is a core component of all courses. It is practiced through engaging activities such as games, debates, presentations, group discussions, and projects.

Is there homework?

Homework may occasionally be assigned. However, considering participants' work and family commitments, assignments are given sparingly.

Are textbooks or learning materials provided?

Yes. Textbooks are provided for beginner groups. Additional materials for other levels are being introduced progressively.

Are there any additional costs?

No. Participation is free of charge.

About Level Placement

How is language level determined?

The application form includes questions to help assess your level. This is confirmed at the beginning of the course by instructors and, when applicable, through a placement test.

Is there a placement test?

Yes. Intermediate-level applicants may take a placement test to ensure accurate group assignment.

Can I change groups during the course?

Yes. Group changes are possible if the assigned level does not match your needs.

How is placement determined for Western to Eastern Armenian adaptation?

This course is designed for Western Armenian speakers with no or limited prior knowledge of Eastern Armenian.

About Group Structure

How many participants are in each group?

Each group has a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 10 participants.

Are participants at similar levels?

Efforts are made to group participants by similar proficiency levels whenever possible.

Is there a wide age range?

Participants typically range in age from 18 to 65. The average age is approximately 33.

About Participation Requirements

Is attendance mandatory?

Yes. Participants are expected to attend all classes.

How many absences are allowed?

Participants may miss up to two classes per month (maximum six per course). Additional absences should be communicated in advance.

Can missed classes be made up?

Yes. Participants may coordinate with the instructor to arrange short catch-up sessions.

What happens if I stop attending?

Participants who stop attending may be removed from the program and replaced by someone from the waiting list.

After the Course

Is a certificate provided?

Yes. Certificates are issued upon successful completion, based on high attendance and satisfactory performance.

Can the certificate be included on a CV?

Yes. However, the certificate does not carry official academic accreditation.

Can I continue to the next level?

Continuation within this program is not available. Alternative learning recommendations may be provided.

About Limitations

Why is participation limited to once?

Participation is limited to allow access for as many repatriates as possible.

Does this rule apply to all course types?

Yes.

If I participated before, can I apply for a different level?

No. Participation is limited to one cycle per individual.
